5 Awesome Portland Toy Stores for Kids & Parents

5 Awesome Portland Toy Stores for Kids and Parents

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. – Albert Einstein

Play is one of the most important jobs your child has! Play is so crucial to child development that it’s recognized by the United Nations as a fundamental right for kids. Play helps children develop cognitive and spatial abilities, learning self-control, and building confidence.

In a world where screen time has taken over, it’s such a breath of fresh air to see kids playing! Passive activities like watching TV, playing video games, or sitting on the computer are totally fine in small doses – and I totally take advantage of them, believe me! We all need a break! But we know that kids are at their best when they can do what they are programmed to do in their youth; play!

Toys powered by imagination are a great way to encourage child-driven play, and we have some fantastic toy stores here in Portland to choose from. From funky urban Portland toy stores to small boutique shops with one-of-a-kind items, here are some great toy stores to check out in the Portland area for kids!

Mud Puddles Toys and Books

This cute little Portland toy store is packed with beautiful puzzles, toys, books, and so many puppets! They were formerly called Child’s Play and have been part of the NW Portland area for over 40 years. If you’re looking for STEM-related toys, you’ll find a bunch here, and the staff is super knowledgeable and are always happy to help. Bonus: they gift wrap for free, so it’s a perfect stop if you are on the way to a birthday party or drop off a new baby gift.

Piccolo Mundo Toys

A local store with three locations in Portland! Piccolo Mondo means “small world” in Italian, and this store specializes in culturally diverse toys. They have some amazing classic wooden toys I’ve never seen anywhere and have many arts and crafts and building and construction toys. They also have a really nice online shop that is organized by age which I really like!

Their window displays are always charming, and the play area for kids is always a big hit. They will deliver for free within two days with a $50 order and offer complimentary gift wrapping, too!

Grasshopper

The go-to for high quality, organic & American-made apparel, non-toxic toys, books & decor. I mentioned this store in my favorite baby stores, but this store has excellent toys for older kids too! This store has an amazing selection for newborns through young children; I especially love their baby essentials for newborn gifting. There are lots of brands here you can’t find anywhere else and some great “old school” toys as well.

Lots of play-inspired toys, a large book selection, and a ton of arts and crafts supplies and kits. This store definitely has something for every age. They have a great Instagram feed, too, with lots of ideas for gifting and activities.

Shopping local at places like this in Portland makes my heart happy! Small businesses need support, and I’ve always found that no one has a heart as big as an independent owner. They will always go the extra mile for you, unlike a chain store.

Making your child’s photo experience is one of my top priorities when taking their photos, and that’s because I put a little piece of my heart into every photo that I take. If you’re looking for a local photographer to take timeless and beautiful photos of your children and family, I’d love to talk to you more about the different sessions I offer.

Get in touch! I can’t wait to meet you and your kids.
