As school is coming to an end in Portland, we are starting the lovely, short summer here in Oregon. The weather is dry, the sun is shining, and it’s time to get outside. That means we all need to find things to do around Portland to soak up this time with our kids, right?! These are my top 3 things to do around Portland that I make sure to do with my four kids every year. These family friendly activities are right outside Hillsboro and Portland! I love having these traditions with my family. These are all outdoors, so they are perfect for social distancing during COVID. Plus they get to run around and just be kids! When we first moved here, I fell in love with all the things that grow here! I’d never lived in a place with so many farms of berries and flowers! Oregon is such a beautiful place and I hope they remember these fun times for years to come! And once you’ve got those done, be sure to check out the beautiful and fun places on this list here too! —-> https://www.redfin.com/blog/what-is-portland-or-known-for/
Strawberry season just opened up the first week of June, and there is still blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and grapes left to ripen. We hit this farm up every year for the past 8 years because not only is the location STUNNING, they have a farm store where you can buy milkshakes, berry pies, kettle corn and other goodies. We picked all these berries in about a half hour then headed back to eat and hang out. They had a live band playing while we enjoyed our fresh berry milkshakes. It’s always a great time! Their website has so much information on when they have events, what’s ready to pick, etc. Check it out here: https://www.hoffmanfarmsstore.com/
West Union Gardens is another place just outside of Hillsboro that we love to go berry picking. I have four kids. They eat a lot of berries. Plus the grapes here are THE BEST. So delicious and easy to pick! They also have zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, garlic, onions – so much variety! I always plan to try to take up pickling but haven’t gotten it yet. They do sell big bags of cucumbers for pickling though if that’s a skill you have!
We always make it a point to go out and see the huuuuuge field of sunflowers they have here. The kids haven’t gotten over it yet. It really just feels magical to be surrounded by a huge field of flowers. There’s paths, and little nooks that they run around and play in. They really love it. Recently, they have been doing tickets to the field that you get off their website to limit the amount of visitors at one time due to COVID precautions so make sure you plan ahead. These come into bloom later in the summer so be sure to check their website to stay up to date on what they have in bloom and what’s ready to pick! http://westuniongardens.com/
If you’ve looked through my photography portfolio, it’s pretty clear that I love flowers and pretty views! This lavender field comes to bloom late June to early July and is perfection. Also, they have a lavender fest every year where you can walk the sprawling fields, eat, and enjoy every kind of product and food made with lavender! Check out their website for dates and to buy tickets. Plus, kids get in free to the lavender fest! Can’t beat that!
