What is a midwife?

A midwife is a trained professional who supports women through childbirth emotionally, physically, mentally, and even spiritually.

In the state of Oregon, a nurse-midwife nurse practitioner (NMNP) must have earned a master’s or higher degree in nurse-midwifery approved by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME).

A midwife is a medical care provider for pregnant women, typically replacing primary doctors or OBGYNs. Midwives work with their patients through pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum.

Women often choose to work with midwives as they typically spend more one-on-one time with their patients, in relativity to doctors. Some women believe that working with a midwife is a more personal, intimate experience overall.

Who can use a midwife?

A midwife is an option for women whose pregnancy and birth are anticipated to be deemed “low-risk”. When consulting with a midwife or physician, always be upfront and honest about your health history, regardless of who you hope to work with.
